Background

What Is

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous sleep disorder that involves breathing constantly stopping and starting during sleep. Those with sleep apnea often snore loudly and feel tired when waking in the morning. People with sleep apnea are at a much greater risk for cardiovascular disease, being overweight, and may report having brain fog.

Sleep Apnea Can Be Life-Threatening If Left Untreated

Understanding the Risks

When a person snores, those sounds are being made because the body is making an extra effort to take in sufficient air. In patients with sleep apnea, the airway becomes partially blocked periodically during sleep. The most dangerous aspect of this condition is that the airway can become fully blocked, which in turn blocks airflow to the lungs until the brain awakens the sleeper. It is for these reasons that sleep apnea can become very dangerous and life threatening if left untreated.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Aside from loud snoring, the most common symptoms that our patients with sleep apnea report are disrupted breathing while sleeping, sudden awakenings during sleep, morning dryness in the throat and mouth, sleepiness during the daytime, irritability, and lack of focus. If you suspect that you or someone you love is suffering from sleep apnea, please contact us right away to schedule an evaluation. Our intervention can provide life-changing support!

Sleep apnea treatment

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

When most people think of sleep apnea treatment, they envision the oversized CPAP machines, which include a mask and hose that people have to wear while they sleep. This is one way to treat sleep apnea, but it is not the best method for patient convenience and comfort. At the Dental Arts Center, we treat sleep apnea by using a simple oral appliance known as a TAP. This device is intelligently designed and looks much like a mouthguard or retainer. The TAP works by pushing the jaw forward during sleep, which in turn creates an open airway and resolves sleep apnea.

At the Dental Arts Center, we treat Sleep Apnea with the TAP Device, as this treatment method is much more modern and sustainable. It provides incredibly reliable, long-term results without the hassle of being connected to masks, hoses, and oversized equipment!

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Any person can develop sleep apnea, and sometimes the root cause is not very well understood. While not as common, children can also suffer from this condition. However, sleep apnea is most common in males, older adults, smokers, the overweight, and those having a thin neck or restricted airway, which is sometimes caused by tonsil inflammation. The good news is that this condition is highly treatable, but prompt intervention is essential as otherwise, sleep apnea can be life-threatening.
