Tooth Extractions
Fortunately, most teeth that are broken, infected, or damaged in some way can be repaired with a simple crown or filling. However, if tooth decay has really taken its toll, such as when the tooth’s inner pulp has decayed to the extent that a root canal is no longer an option, the best course of action may indeed be tooth extraction.
Tooth Extraction Can Be Necessary
While no person likes the idea of permanently removing their tooth, it is sometimes necessary as a severely decayed tooth that is not removed can result in gum disease, which can silently destroy other teeth or result in heart attack or stroke. Therefore, removing the decayed tooth and replacing it with a prosthetic such as a bridge or dentures can be the very best choice for oral health and overall wellness.
Aside from decay, there are other situations when tooth extraction is also ideal or even necessary. For example, an impacted tooth or an overcrowded mouth - that is preventing other teeth from fitting in the mouth - could require the removal of a tooth. Sometimes, we see the overcrowded mouth situation in kids who have baby teeth that have not yet fallen out but need to be removed to make space for permanent teeth. A similar situation can be seen with third molars or wisdom teeth, both of which need to be removed if they are impacted or if there’s not enough space in the mouth. Likewise, prior to orthodontic procedures (braces), teeth occasionally need to be extracted to be sure that when they are straightened, each tooth has space to properly settle into place. Finally, another common situation in which tooth extraction is necessary could involve cases of gum disease that has severely damaged the tooth’s structure. Regardless of the situation, our dentists are highly competent at extracting and replacing teeth. If you believe that you or a family member may need tooth extraction, please reach out to us immediately and request an appointment with Dr. Eddie Lorents.
Schedule NowWhat Is Put In Place Of My Extracted Tooth?
While tooth extraction isn’t always ideal, it is sometimes necessary to remove a tooth. Following an extraction procedure, bone preservation is of vital importance as it prevents jaw bone deformation, which in turns allows for future tooth replacement. For every extraction and tooth replacement, our dentists at the Dental Arts Center use their rigorous education and advanced expertise to skillfully replace the extracted tooth with an attractive prosthetic such as a bridge or dentures. While this process can sound scary for some, please know that we are experts in both medical and cosmetic dentistry. Therefore, our patients can be assured that our talented dentists will deliver a solution that is a win for the patient’s health needs and aesthetic goals!
Appointment RequestDo You Offer Second Opinions On Tooth Extractions?
Absolutely. At the Dental Arts Center, extracting a tooth is sometimes necessary but given its permanent and irreversible nature, it is also our very last resort. We are happy to give second opinions on tooth extractions, as we often times use a much more conservative approach than other dentists. In order for us to recommend tooth extraction, we must have first eliminated all alternative, more conservative options.
“We only remove a permanent tooth when it’s in the very best interests of the patient. We also pride ourselves on making tooth extraction a virtually pain-free experience.”
